Haunting Photos of the Abandoned 1984 Winter Olympics Facilities

I am normally pretty dismissive of sports. That hasn’t totally changed (for example, I didn’t watch the Zomgz Gold Medal Hockey Game today), but I did enjoy watching the Olympics. It exposed me to a lot of sports (and countries!) I had never heard of before, renewed my interest in learning to speak Russian and someday visiting the country, and even made me want to try learning a sport, like biathlon. Or maybe just old-timey biathlon.

But today someone posted these photos on Facebook. I had an emotional reaction to them that I can’t quite explain. Maybe it’s from watching the grandiosity of various Opening Ceremonies over the years, and contrasting those to the stark emptiness of the images. Or the fact that every four years, these elaborate structures are built and the whole world tunes in to watch feats of human greatness, and this is all it amounts to in the end.

    1. Whoa dude, that sounds heavy. Good luck on your mission. Just curious, is it like a church mission? A war mission? Or maybe an impossible mission?

      Pls respond
